Back in my sugar burning days I would "treat myself" with a soy vanilla latte and a scone to ease the discomfort of long flights. This would usually lead to more sugar cravings and the eventual roller coaster of sugar highs and cranky lows. Combine this emotional situation, with cramped airplane seats, stale cabin air and an inability to move freely, and I was a hot mess.
Now that I understand the biology of what sugar does in my body, I treat myself to nutritious food that provides even energy and mental clarity.
Before leaving home, I pack my carry on with snacks. Here are some of our favorites:
- Hard boiled eggs
- Sliced cucumber, broccoli florets, red cabbage and snap peas
- Macadamia nuts
- Single serving guacamole tubs
- Single serving coconut butter packs
However, sometimes this sort of preparation is not possible. For example, I was flying home the other day and didn't have time to hit the grocery store before the airport. I'm not going to lie- my first thought was: Starbucks!! But I knew the price I would pay, so I decided to investigate the airport eating scene for healthier options. I was pleasantly surprised!
At one of the sit down restaurants I ordered my usual dining out meal: a salad with protein and oil and vinegar on the side. I'm sure the salmon was farmed (did you know that all "Atlantic" salmon is??), but there is no such thing as perfection. It's all about making the best choices in each situation.
In a shop I bought kale chips and pumpkin seeds in case I felt snacky on the plane. (I always read the labels to avoid vegetable oils and sugar- these brands are squeaky clean.)
On my next layover I was excited to find a "Paleo Lunch Box". The dressing was made with olive oil (instead of soybean or sunflower) so it was surprisingly legit.
I arrived at my final destination happily satiated, with energy and enthusiasm for my three hour drive to the cabin. No need to pull over and take a nap on the way home!
