I had a very small window today to complete my Primal Kitchen® Collagen Treats recipe book, write a blog post and record a podcast. I was quickly becoming frustrated with my inability to make my recipe book perfect. I was encountering so much resistance in the quest for perfection.Read More
Writing the word "struggle" in the title of this blog post was hard for me. I'm all about releasing the struggle, and I believe that my thoughts and words create my reality. But I had a realization that perhaps it is first necessary to acknowledge and sit with the struggle before you can begin to climb out of if.Read More
Today is the official start of our summer vacation- yay! Nothing signifies the start of summer like the emergence of the fiddleheads. I spent the morning in a delightfully meditative state, foraging for the special green beauties. My Alaskan friends and I agree: there is something deeply primal about heading out into the woods and gathering wild plants. It just feels right. It's also amazing to come home with bags full of nutrient dense vegetation.Read More
I was just out tending to my tapped birch trees: collecting the nutrient dense water, listening to the spring birds sing, enjoying the calming energy of the woods. It was exciting to see that the trees gave me exactly five gallons of water over night! I have been having so much fun collecting and bottling the water for fermentation. My goal is to produce champagne, and that will be exciting, but I'm definitely enjoying the whole process. If the champagne experiment fails, oh well!Read More
I've been talking a lot lately about the process of mentally preparing for transformation as I think it is a missing link in so many diets and nutrition plans. This week I'd like to continue with that thread and discuss the importance of a support team.Read More
How are you doing? Have you made any progress selecting a nutrition plan that aligns with your radiant future self? Did you notice I said "nutrition plan" instead of "diet"? Yes, I purposely did not use the D word. In my mind that word means a restrictive, regimented torture utilized to reach a certain weight. That's not how your future self wants to live, is it?Read More
Congratulations! You have made it to Part 3 in the Reclaiming Your Health Series! (Part 1 and Part 2) I hope that you loving your food and eating mindfully, and connecting to your why and your vision of radiant health.
This week you will solidify your belief in that healthy future self. If you can believe it you can achieve it! In the words of Buddha: “Our life is the creation of our mind.”Read More
"I don't know where to start."
I've heard this statement repeatedly in the last few weeks, from people who are ready to make healthy changes, but feel overwhelmed by the abundance of (often conflicting) health information.Read More
For so many years I took dieting and exercising way too seriously. I was fanatical, and quite often a stick in the mud. It was stressful to live in such a regimented way!
Adopting the primal lifestyle has given me a whole new perspective on health; now being healthy feels like freedom and fun!
Today I'd like to share some of my tips for having fun with your health.Read More
I receive many client and reader questions about snacks. I find that these questions tend to stem from two different situations.
#1 Snacking when you are truly hungry.
#2 Snacking because you are conditioned to snacking.Read More
Tom was reminiscing about enjoying enchiladas in Mexico.
I had a cabbage sitting in my fridge.
"Steamed cabbage leaves", I thought, "could make decent enchilada wraps!"
Truly, the goodness of enchiladas equals the meat, the sauce and the cheese. Would Tom even miss tortillas?Read More
One of the fascinating things I have discovered while working with clients is that food issues get in the way of experiencing life to the fullest. While this may sound obvious to readers who are in the midst of a food struggle, I didn't make this connection until I fully adopted a primal lifestyle.Read More
Happy New Year, friends! Tom and I have just returned from a beautiful trip to Mexico, filled with sun, seafood, sand, nature, guacamole, and a bit of tequila. We had a fabulous time, staying fairly true to our primal roots, with a glorious exception here and there. The exceptions were fun (warm homemade corn tortillas with fried shrimp and queso fresco!) but now we are ready to get back on track.Read More
Today I want to talk about belief.
I will start by sharing a personal story. For the past 15+ years Tom and I have gone on a tropical vacation for the winter holidays. Traditionally I spent the months before vacation exercising ferociously and severely restricting my diet so that I could be "bikini" ready. I repeated this behavior year after year.Read More
Anyone feeling a twinge of holiday anxiety? I am!
Last week I recommended taking on the role of an observer, to pay attention to behavioral patterns and automatic responses regarding holiday treats.
I try to practice what I preach. As a result I've noticed a steady increase in my anxiety levels and a corresponding desire to create and indulge in paleo/keto treats.Read More
I overheard a conversation earlier this week: a woman was lamenting that she had "totally overdone it" over the holiday weekend. She felt she'd gone crazy at the dessert table and now she was off the rails, devouring every sugary item in sight.Read More
